CathedralGerman Sampler Series 6
A church-like structure was often featured in German samplers of this era, symbolizing the existence and presence of God on Earth. This structure bears a strong resemblance to Magdeburg Dom, the tallest gothic cathedral in the Saxony-Anhalt region in Germany. It would not be surprising if a sampler stitched in this region in 1769 featured such a motif.
